The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander has been awarded a 2018 Top Safety Pick designation by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This is the second-highest safety award possible from the IIHS.

The IIHS is a non-profit organization that tests and evaluates vehicles each model year for safety. For 2018, the IIHS implemented several new safety tests, including additional front passenger crash tests and headlight tests. Vehicles then received ratings according to their performance in these safety tests.

The Outlander model awarded the Top Safety Pick was equipped with its optional front crash prevention and specific headlights, helping to improve its overall score.

Don Swearingen, Mitsubishi Motors North America‘s executive vice president and chief operating officer, expressed his excitement surrounding the award. “Thanks to our advanced safety features and technology, the Mitsubishi Outlander continues to achieve IIHS safety ratings for the fifth consecutive year,” he said. “The Outlander remains a leader in reliability and dependability, and we are proud to receive this recognition by one of the most reputable organizations in the industry.”

The results of several different safety tests determine the receipients of IIHS’ Top Safety Pick designation. According to Mitsubishi, these include tests of the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. The Top Safety Pick designation requires a “good” rating on all of these tests.

This year’s Outlander is equipped with a variety of driver-assist features to help prevent accidents outright. The crossover comes standard with Hill Start Assist (HSA). The third trim, SEL, comes standard with a Blind Spot Warning (BSW) system with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and Lane Change Assist (LCA). Drivers can also opt for the Touring Package, adding features like Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and automatic high beams.

The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander seats up to seven passengers and is available in four trims: ES, SE, SEL, and GT.
