New tech from Nissan will help drivers see around interior obstacles for an unobstructed rear view. The Intelligent Rear View Mirror (I-RVM) is an innovative screen built into a vehicle’s regular rearview mirror that can navigate around things like cargo, tall passengers, or the actual aesthetics of the vehicle that might otherwise get in the way of the driver’s line of vision.

According to Nissan, “The mirror’s built-in LCD monitor provides expanded field of view and improved visibility in low-light conditions, allowing the driver to feel more confident when maneuvering in a variety of traffic conditions.”

Drivers don’t have to wait very long to experience this new technology; the I-RVM is featured on the 2018 Nissan Armada, which goes on sale in September, and will be offered as a standard feature on the Armada’s Platinum trim.

Although this tech is quite ground-breaking, it is not obtrusive to the driver or to the look of the SUV’s interior.

“The Intelligent Rear View Mirror looks just like a traditional rearview mirror, except it has a built-in LCD monitor that can be activated with the flip of a switch located at the bottom of the mirror – even while the Armada is moving. This allows the driver to access either the conventional rearview mirror reflection (to see, for example, what is happening inside the rear of the Armada), or the new intelligent view as desired,” explains Nissan.

When activated, the I-RVM can deliver drivers a clear, practically glare-free picture of what’s behind them, no matter the time of day or interference from intense headlights.
