2018 Toyota Camry exterior

The 2018 Toyota Camry enters its eighth generation and 35th model year with a bang. Long hailed as the “safe but boring” pick of the mid-size sedan segment, much as vanilla is to ice cream, the Toyota Camry has looked to remake itself into something a little more dynamic without losing its family-friendly appeal. As far as we can tell, it worked.

The 2018 Toyota Camry is available in ten trim levels: L, LE, XLE, XLE V6, SE, XSE, XSE V6, Hybrid LE, Hybrid SE, and Hybrid XLE.

2018 Toyota Camry Exterior

The Camry is Toyota‘s best-selling sedan and a staple of the mid-size segment. It would have been easy to keep playing it safe but Toyota decided it no longer wanted to do that, especially as more and more customers have been moving on from sedans to SUVs. How to keep them from leaving? Make the 2018 Toyota Camry sexy and sporty, of course! At its heart, the Camry is still a family sedan, but it certainly makes a more exciting first impression than it has in the past, what with its lower and wider stance, bulging hood, and a front end so aggressive it inspired its NASCAR counterpart, rather than the other way around. In other words, it’s now possible to go around in a Toyota Camry without looking like a bore.

The 2018 Toyota Camry is available in the following exterior colors: Ruby Flare Pearl, Midnight Black Metallic*, Super White, Celestial Silver Metallic*, Predawn Gray Mica, Galactic Aqua Mica, Brownstone, Blue Crush Metallic, Wind Chill Pearl*, and Blue Streak Metallic.

*Also offered with Midnight Black Metallic roof and rear spoiler on select trims levels.

2018 Toyota Camry Performance

The 2018 Toyota Camry comes with three available powertrains: a standard 2.5-liter “Dynamic Force” four-cylinder that makes 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, an optional 3.5-liter V6 that makes 301 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque, and for the hybrid models a 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with dual electric motors, which makes 176 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque. The two conventional powertrains use Toyota’s new eight-speed automatic while the hybrid uses a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with an available Sport mode, adding the ability to simulate the shift points of a six-speed sequential automatic so that even your hybrid can feel fun to drive.

Toyota has placed much emphasis on the sportiness of this new Camry. The car already looks the part and boasts a good chunk more horsepower and torque than in previous years, but more importantly, how does it handle? It turns out Toyota put its money where its mouth is and produced an actually decent car for those who want to have a good time behind the wheel when they’re not saving gas. The Camry is nimbler than ever, in part thanks to its lower body and longer wheelbase, but also because of the new control-arm and toe-link rear suspension. Once upon a time it might have seemed impossible to have this much fun in a Camry…with the 2018 model, that time has passed.

2018 Toyota Camry Efficiency

Even though the 2018 Toyota Camry comes with a renewed promise of performance and fun, it remains a Toyota—and that means crushing the competition with regards to efficiency. The base model, with its 2.5-liter four-cylinder and eight-speed automatic, gets a very good 29 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 34 mpg combined.* Even with the V6, mileage is strong: 22 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.* Opt for the hybrid, however, and you’ll get fuel economy numbers that nearly match that of the Prius: 51 mpg city, 53 mpg highway, and 52 mpg combined.*

*EPA estimates. Actual mileage may vary.

2018 Toyota Camry Interior

The 2018 Toyota Camry sits lower to the ground than before, but thanks to a beltline that has been similarly lowered, outward visibility is still just as good. Nonetheless, the sedan has lost a fraction of its generous interior space, though not so much that most riders would notice. For the hybrid models, it’s the other way around: with the battery now under the rear seat, the trunk has gained two cubic feet of room and the rear seat can now fold 60/40.

At the front, the latest Entune 3.0 infotainment system is excellent and embedded into a beautifully designed dashboard and center console, with primary and secondary controls that are exceedingly easy to use. One of the Camry’s highlights is its available 800-watt, nine-speaker JBL® sound system, though you unfortunately won’t be using Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™ to bring your music to your car, as Toyota is currently in a legal feud with both companies for refusing to fully disclose the security protocols of their back-end programming. Toyota has thus built its own app, called Scout GPS, which works alongside the Entune system to bring you phone-based navigation and all the apps you care about, as long as you connect your smartphone via Bluetooth.

2018 Toyota Camry Safety

The 2018 Toyota Camry has yet to be crash-tested by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, the 2017 model was featured among the safest sedans on the road and it’s difficult to imagine Toyota would have suddenly forgotten how to engineer a safe car. What’s more, all Camrys now come standard with the automaker’s Toyota Safety Sense™ P suite of active safety technologies to help you avoid getting into accidents in the first place. Notably, it includes adaptive cruise control, a technology normally reserved for luxury cars.

Standard Safety Features

  • Star Safety System™
  • Hill Start Assist Control (HAC)
  • LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children)
  • Driver and front passenger Whiplash-Injury-Lessening (WIL) seats
