2018 Toyota Corolla exterior

The 2018 Toyota Corolla is a compact sedan and one of the most affordable vehicles in the Japanese manufacturer’s lineup. It offers a combination of exterior style, interior amenities, impeccable safety ratings, and good-but-not-underpowered efficiency rarely seen in its segment. It has long held the title of “best selling car in the world” and it takes little investigation to discover why.

The 2018 Toyota Corolla is available in six trim levels: L, LE, LE Eco, XLE, SE, and XSE.

What’s New for the 2018 Toyota Corolla?

After a moderate refresh last year, the 2018 Toyota Corolla is mostly unchanged. It gets illuminated vanity mirrors on the front-seat sun visors, a leather-trimmed steering wheel on the XLE and manual-gearbox SE, and some upgraded controls in the cabin.

2018 Toyota Corolla Exterior

The 2018 Toyota Corolla, though not as head-turning as its Corolla iM sibling, nonetheless manages to catch the eye with dramatic styling and the new grille and LED headlamps it gained in 2017. At the LE Eco trim level and below the car gets bi-LED lights, while higher trims get distinctive multi-LED projectors with LED accent lights. On the SE and XSE, a glossy-black mesh grille adds a touch of sportiness to a unique front end. It’s a dramatic styling effort not supported by the car’s performance that some people will find quirky rather than interesting.

The 2018 Toyota Corolla is available in the following exterior colors: Classic Silver Metallic, Black Sand Pearl, Barcelona Red Metallic, Super White, Blizzard Pearl, Slate Metallic, Falcon Gray Metallic, Galactic Aqua Mica, and Blue Crush Metallic.

2018 Toyota Corolla Performance

All 2018 Toyota Corolla models are powered by a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder with Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) technology. The engine makes 132 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 128 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 RPM. Interestingly, the LE Eco—which bears a name you would traditionally associate with reduced performance in the quest for more efficiency—offers slightly more power than all the others: 140 hp at 6,100 RPM and 126 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM. Regardless of trim, power is routed to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). For those who prefer to take control over their driving, a six-speed manual is available on the SE.

2018 Toyota Corolla Efficiency

The 2018 Toyota Corolla has earned respectable EPA-estimated mileage numbers. The base model gets 28 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined, while the LE Eco gets an even better 30/40/34 mpg. Fuel economy takes the slightest dip on the upper trims, on account of them being better equipped and thus slightly heavier: 28/35/31 mpg for both the SE and XSE, and 27/35/30 mpg for the SE equipped with a manual gearbox.

2018 Toyota Corolla Interior

The 2018 Toyota Corolla may technically be a “compact” sedan, but the class-leading legroom at the rear beg to differ. The interior is functional above everything else, sometimes to its detriment. Despite the standard Entune infotainment system with 6.1-inch touchscreen and its rather impressive list of standard and available amenities, the Toyota Corolla lacks the adornment that will make you fall in love. Still, if the goal is lay everything out in a logical and convenient manner without a care for style, you can’t argue that the Toyota Corolla knocks it out of the park.

2018 Toyota Corolla Safety

Being a Toyota, the 2018 Toyota Corolla doesn’t lack for anything in the safety department. It comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense P, a suite of active safety technologies not often seen at this price point, and received the highest-possible five-star score for overall safety in testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Though it has yet to be crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) this year, the 2017 model was named a Top Safety Pick+ and there’s no reason to believe the structurally-identical 2018 model won’t be able to manage it again.

Standard Safety Features

  • Toyota Safety Sense™ P: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beams, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Star Safety System™: Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, and Smart Stop Technology
  • Eight airbags: Driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags, driver knee airbag, passenger seat-cushion airbag, and front and rear side curtain airbags
