Chevy has been poring over the 2019 Silverado 1500 bed design like treasure hunters scouring a beach, looking for as many ways to make it better as they could find. Now, Chevy has revealed the new 2019 Silverado 1500 bed, in all its glory, and its new, somewhat odd nickname, the Durabed.

So, before we move on, I think that Durabed is a goofy name. However, since the improvements are actually pretty nice and I’m trying to be serious, I will try to keep it together. But seriously, pfft, “Durabed”?

Anyway, here is what the (ahem) Durabed is adding to the 2019 Silverado 1500. First up is a full dozen standard fixed tie-downs, each of which can handle 500 pounds of force before bending. For a little more, you can add another nine movable tie-down points for a total of 21 — the most of any full-size pickup.

The bed comes standard paired with a redesigned CornerStep for the bumper, offering better clearance for people wearing steel-toed boots. There are other available integrated bed improvements, including in-bed LED lighting, a 110/120-volt power outlet, and four tailgate variants, including models with lift assist and one that can be raised and lowered using the key fob.

The most impressive part about the Durabed (sigh) is its cargo volume. In the last model, the Silverado 1500 bed held 53 cubic feet in the short box, 62 cubic feet in the standard, and 75 cubic feet in the long box. For 2019, the bed holds 63 cubic feet in the short, 72 cubic feet in the standard, and 89 cubic feet in the long. This is mostly due to increasing the width of the boxes by about 7 inches each.

That gives the 2019 Silverado 1500 at least 10 cubic feet more cargo box volume than either the 2019 Ford F-Series or the 2019 Ram 1500, even though the depth and length of the boxes in each are about the same. Other than the name, the Durabed seems like a great addition to the new pickup.
