Update (1/17): Added quote from Flint Engine Operations Plant Manager John Urbanic

General Motors did not let the speculation linger from long with regards to where it will build the 2019 Chevy Silverado’s new 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel. Just a few short days after the reveal of the redesigned Silverado 1500 and the announcement of its turbodiesel engine option, Flint Engine Operations was named as the manufacturing hub for an engine that GM North America President Mark Reuss insinuated will easily best the turbodiesel offering in the Ford F-150.

Automotive News on Tuesday reported that GM VP of Global Propulsion Systems Dan Nicholson confirmed Flint as the production site for the 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel, backing up a statement from Reuss following the Silverado’s official unveiling on Saturday in which he said that there would be “some announcements around Flint.”

While Nicholson did not dole out any further technical details about the turbodiesel, he did tell Auto News that the turbodiesel—the first to be offered in a full-size GM pickup since the 1990s—would be an all-new General Motors design.

Currently, Flint Engine produces the 1.4-liter engine utilized in the Chevrolet Cruze, Volt, and all-new Equinox. It also has the distinction of being GM’s first powertrain plant to meet zero-waste-to-landfill standards, which it originally achieved in March 2005. It would not be unlikely for the addition of the 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel to require an additional investment in the facility; the last investment at Flint Engine Operations came in 2015, when $263 millions was put toward a new engine line.

“The next-generation Silverado builds on the success of our current models, many of which are produced here in Flint. We are proud to expand the industry-leading diesel portfolio here in Vehicle City,” said John Urbanic, Flint Engine Operations plant manager.

GM’s 6.6-liter Duramax V8 turbodiesel engine is built at DMAX, Ltd. in Moraine, Ohio—a 60:40 joint venture between General Motors and Isuzu Diesel Services of America. The 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel found in the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado is built at General Motors’ Powertrain Plant in Rayong, Thailand.

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado will be built at GM’s Fort Wayne Assembly.
