Everyone knows that BMW represents the best in German engineering. What they might not be aware of, however, is that BMW has a very healthy manufacturing arm here in the United States. This week, BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, produced its 3.5 millionth vehicle.

The BMW X4 xDrive20i SUV rolled off of the assembly line in a shade of mineral white metallic, ready for the road ahead. While the car is not destined to remain in the United States, its shipping destination is still pretty cool. This top-of-the-line SUV is bound for Fuyang, China, about seven hours west of Shanghai.

The Spartanburg facility builds about 1,400 cars a day, and last year a record 400,904 cars rolled out of the plant bound for more than 140 countries. BMW’s South Carolina team is responsible for building the X3, X4, X5, and X5 Sport Activity Vehicles. Manfred Erlacher, BMW Manufacturing President and CEO said “This achievement is due to the outstanding commitment and dedication of our Associates to produce premium quality vehicles for customers. Customers around the world love our products, and our X models are an important part of the company’s success.”

BMW is constantly investing in the Spartanburg facility so that it can continue to build vehicles well into the future. In March of 2014, ten years after the plant originally opened in 1994, a one billion dollar expansion was announced for the plant, and part of that ongoing growth is in the facility’s body shop. A 608,000 square foot addition will make the BMW body shop more than 1.2 million square feet, which is enough room to build all of the framed bodies needed for production. Later expansion plans include creating space to build the confirmed BMW X7 that will hopefully be on sale soon.
