2015 Nissan LEAF

Nissan LEAF owners aren’t the type you’d expect to start hot-rodding their little electric cars, but as it turns out, there are several popular modifications that LEAF owners have come up with over the years to make it more comfortable, safer, and can even extend the range.

Trailer Hitch

Okay, hear us out; you aren’t going to be towing anything. You can buy several Class 1 trailer hitches for the LEAF that have a maximum tongue weight of 150 to 200 pounds, which is perfect for hauling around you other green form of transportation: a bicycle. You’ll impress all of your friends with your dedication to the zero-emission lifestyle. It’s also really nice to have a bicycle when the battery runs out. The Curt hitch pictured above is reasonably priced and can handle up to 150 pounds.

LED/HID Headlights

Your LEAF already has LED low beams that are great at saving electricity, but the high beams and interior lights are still halogen bulbs that use more electricity than LEDs. Replace your interior lights with brighter, more efficient LED bulbs and get rid of those halogen high-beams in favor of High Intensity Discharge bulbs, which are extremely bright and use half the electricity. You can even get interior LED bulbs in almost any color imaginable, but we’d recommend the pure white ones. It will be a vast improvement over the dull, yellow hue of filament bulbs. The high beams are size H3 bulbs and the interior lights are wedge bulbs. Superbrightleds.com has a helpful bulb finder to make sure you’re getting the correct size.

Louder Horn

As an electric car, the Nissan LEAF is silent, which is great for sneaking up on people. Being sneaky isn’t the best when you’re driving in traffic, as you want people to know that you’re there in hopes of not getting crashed into. Nissan puts wimpy city horns on the LEAF from the factory, so many owners have chosen to upgrade to louder ones like the Hella horns pictured above that can be heard well at highway speeds. Now you’ll be able to sneak up on people and scare them to death.
