None of which have sold in the United States, and its success in Europe and Japan means it might stay that way for a good long while.

33,000 Outlander Plug-in HybridsMitsubishi may not be able to pin down the date (or even a year) for the launch of their Outlander Plug-in Hybrid in the United States, but a good portion of the roadblock preventing the PHEV from making it stateside has to do with its success in the European and Japanese markets. At this week’s Plug In 2014 Conference in San Jose, Mitsubishi stated that they have sold 33,000 Outlander Plug-In Hybrids around the world in markets where demand for a fuel efficient SUV is particularly high.

According to AutoblogGreen, Mitsubishi Motors North America Senior Manager of Incentives Fuminori Kojima said that the company has sold 6,000 Outlander PHEVs in Holland alone, accounting for approximately one-third of all sales in Europe. Mitsubishi delivered the other 15,000 units in its home country of Japan.

The Outlander PHEV is particularly popular with drivers for its 30 mile EV range, electric top speed of around 70mph, and the fact that it can generate 80 percent battery power from a 30 minute charge at a CHAdeMO DC quick charge station.

While moving 33,000 Outlander Plug-In Hybrids in Europe and Japan is good news for Mitsubishi, it’s not particularly good news for American drivers patiently awaiting its stateside arrival. Kojima told AutoblogGreen that the current timetable for the Outlander PHEV’s U.S. arrival is October or November 2015, due to the need for testing and the limited battery production capacity.

As such, the focus out of the gate is the domestic market and the market with the most demand, which means that Japan and Europe will continue to reap the benefits of the Outlander PHEV until Mitsubishi can catch up. The wait continues, America! Thanks, Obama.
