Traveling in a car for hours on end can get a bit unnerving, especially if the same songs keep playing over and over on the radio. Even a perfectly crafted playlist can get tiresome if you’re not in the mood to jam out while behind the wheel. If, instead, you wish to listen to some stories during your own journey, check out these five audiobooks to listen to on a road trip.

There will be immediate naysayers reading this who will groan and say, “Read another book for once in your life!” But to them I say, “I am what I am, an’ I’m not ashamed.” During a road trip from Ohio to California, I queued up this title and Jim Dale greeted me with that oh-so-familiar first line of the magical Harry Potter series, “Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.” Before I knew it, I had driven across the entire state of Nebraska, which is quite an arduous task.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, read by Claire Danes

Before the popular Hulu series existed, literary fans enjoyed the chilling book version of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Telling the story of a dystopian future in New England, you’ll be hooked as actress Claire Danes guides you through each plot point. Be sure to listen to this one during the day though, because you might get too spooked listening on a dark, lonesome roadway.

11-22-63: A Novel by Stephen King, read by Craig Wasson

Actor Craig Wasson lends his voice to tell the tale of 11-22-63, the story of a time traveler who attempts to stop the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which occurred on November 22, 1963. The novel was released in 2011 and was adapted into a TV series on Hulu, starring James Franco as the time traveling Jake Epping.
