Mario Kart has been an enormously successful video game franchise for Nintendo ever since the first title in the series, Super Mario Kart, hit the shelves in 1992. The saga puts various characters from the Mario world – branching from the old, like Mario, Luigi, and Peach, to the new, like Wendy, Rosalina, and Metal Mario – against each other in rowdy racing matches on over-the-top maps and tracks.

Naturally, these vibrant and varied characters can’t be caught riding around in boring cars, so for the last 20+ years, the artists at Nintendo have been designing clever and cute vehicles with varying abilities. The latest batch for the latest game, Mario Kart 8, contains some of the best so far.

Some of the karts from Mario Kart 8 are so cool, in fact, that we wish they were real:

The Biddybuggy

This softer kart was inspired by the Para-Biddybuds of Super Mario 3D Land, and, just like the cuddly-appearing monsters that the Biddybuggy is based on, it sneaks up on you as one of the deadliest. The Biddybuggy isn’t the fastest option, but it does have some of the best acceleration and handling in the game.

The Cat Cruiser

As we start to get slightly more menacing while still dwelling on the unassuming realm, we have the Cat Cruiser, which is essentially a Volkswagen New Beetle, shaped like Peach’s cat form in Super Mario 3D World. This kart has all the average specifications, with no pros or cons, allowing you to drive standard in style.

The Landship

Next up, we have the Landship, a pirate ship on wheels inspired by Bowser’s Airships in Super Mario Bros. 3. Its stats are the same as the Biddybuggy’s, with a much more rugged appearance. And who doesn’t want to pretend to be a pirate?

The Mach 8

And then there’s the Mach 8, one of the fastest karts in the game. This speed-demon isn’t based on any Mario-lore; the Mach 8 appears to be a combination of a jet and a ’50s Formula 1 car. What this kart lacks in traction it makes up for in straight-up speed.

The Gold Standard

Lastly, we have the Gold Standard. This is the ultimate unlockable kart in the game, and its name keeps you from guessing. It is literally the standard kart, made almost entirely of pixel gold – a utilitarian trophy to prove your mad skills in multi-player mode.

There are more than 20 karts available in the game, including our top five, not to mention the long list of bikes, with tons of combinations between kart, wheel choice, and your glider preference. Oh, and did we mention that, thanks to some Nintendo-sponsored DLC, you and Yoshi can take a spin in a virtual Mercedes-Benz GLA?
