The 4 and 5 Series have been on fire this year

Here’s something of an unsurprising finding: the BMW models that have sold well throughout the rest of 2017 sold well once again in October. In September, these models even led the BMW brand to experience sales increases.

Still, sales were back to a slight 3.4% decline last month.

BMW Sales in Other Markets: BMW’s global sales

In an industry where passenger cars are losing out to SUVs, BMW continues to be a subversion to that trend. In fact, passenger car sales were up by 7.2% last month.

The 5 Series and 4 Series continued to be some of the BMW brand’s best sellers. BMW sold 3,396 BMW 5 Series vehicles last month, while simultaneously selling 3,181 4 Series models.

The X5 is delivering sales to BMW’s struggling utility segment

At the other end of the spectrum, BMW’s light truck sales are still on a rather sharp decline. BMW sold 6,639 of these vehicles last month, a 22.5% sales decrease.

Of course, not every BMW utility model is struggling with sales. The BMW X5 continues to find success, with a 9.5% sales increase to 4,254 units in October.

The electric models in BMW’s lineup are starting to gain quite a bit of ground

Another area where BMW is currently excelling in is the electric vehicle market. BMW’s electric model sales are up 20.6%. In fact, electric vehicle sales accounted for 5.5% of BMW’s overall sales.

At the end of the month, BMW sold 23,208 of its brand vehicles. The 3.4% sales decline is similar to the brand’s year-to-date sales loss of 4.2%.

MINI isn’t faring quite as well, with a 7.2% sales loss last month. So far this year, MINI sales are down by 10.3%.

Across all of its lineups, BMW has sold 281,839 vehicles in 2017. Compared to the 297,015 vehicles it had sold by the end of October in 2016, this results in a 5.1% year-to-date sales decline.
