While we’ve been reporting on the North American International Auto Show, also known as the Detroit Auto Show, all week, the event actually doesn’t open to the public until Saturday, January 16th. If you’re headed to Detroit’s Cobo Center to see all the cool new production models and concepts (or to catch a whiff of New Car Smell), prepare yourself with these tips.

  1. Buy tickets online—Any auto show tends to have long lines at the box office. Tickets can be purchased online from the official NAIAS website and picked up at the e-Ticket counter near the entrance to Hall C (more details are available when tickets are ordered).
  2. Pay attention to opening hours and special events—The show’s opening hours vary, and admittance cuts off an hour before NAIAS closes for the night. Education Day is on Wednesday January 20th, which means that the Cobo Center will be fairly busy with students, and there are other special events throughout the show’s duration. Details can be found on the official website so that you can plan which events to attend (or avoid).
  3. Plan your visit—Check out the Detroit Auto Show’s floor plan to get a feel for where all of the automakers will be parked, and make a list of your must-see vehicles. The Official NAIAS App also has a show floor map loaded on it, so it would be a good idea to download it before you arrive. Automakers also tend to give out a lot of brochures and goodies at the show, so bringing along an empty tote bag to carry it all around will make sure that your arms stay free.
  4. Get there early—Arrive at the Detroit Auto Show before noon to get a head start before the biggest crowds get there. The event is internationally renowned for displaying the latest and greatest the automotive world has to offer, so it tends to get pretty busy. Arriving early also means that you have a more flexible schedule. If the crowd around the 2017 Lincoln Continental is a bit large, you can go see the Nissan Titan Warrior Concept and come back later without worrying about running out of time.
  5. Be ready for the weather—Before traveling to the event, make sure to check weather forecasts and be prepared for what the Michigan winter has to offer. The auto show has a coat check so you don’t have to worry about hauling around a puffy winter coat all day.
