4G63 Mitsubishi Powered Ford Mustang

When you go to the drag strip and see a Mustang, you’d expect it to have the big V8 engine that it originally came with, or perhaps an even bigger one.

The Mitsubishi powered Mustang in this video breaks all the rules by employing a 4G63 2.0-liter four cylinder that used to be found in cars like the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Lancer Evolution. With the help of an enormous 80mm turbocharger and a little nitrous oxide, this old Mustang puts out 950 horsepower. We can imagine the confused faces of bystanders when this thing starts up and they hear the high pitched buzz of a hopped up four-cylinder.

We’re used to the more common tradition of swapping big American V8 engines into small Japanese cars, but this Mustang proves that it can be done the other way around, and we respect that.

The Fox-body Mustang originally came with a 5.0-liter V8 and is a hugely popular platform for drag racing. The owner, Jesse Abele, said, “We would break transfer cases, transmissions, and rearends. That’s the main reason we picked the Fox body. We can mate our engine with a reliable Powerglide and an 8.8 and stick it in one of the best working stock suspension chassis in door car racing.”

The 4G63 engine it has now was developed by that joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler back in the 80’s and 90’s and only produced about 135 horsepower without a turbo.

According to the video description, the car was built by CDub Racing in Louisville, Kentucky. Check out the original article on the build here.
