A New Mitsubishi Compact Electric SUV Could Arrive by 2020

Mitsubishi has been heading down the “electric vehicle” road for quite a while now. With the production of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV hitting high notes around the world—though it has yet to make it into the American market—it comes as no surprise that the Japanese carmaker is focusing on decreasing its carbon foot print.

Now, it looks like the brand is taking a huge leap forward with a brand-new all-electric mini SUV.

According to Australia’s Motoring magazine, the president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Osamu Masuko, let news of this all-new green compact crossover slip accidentally. In a recent visit with South Australia’s Kangaroo island council, Masuko-san referred to the production of a small Mitsubishi electric-powered SUV with a 400-kilometer range (the equivalent of about 250 miles).

Better yet? This fuel-efficient crossover would hit the global market by 2020.

Besides the big reveal that this vehicle is in the works, very little information was let known. The vehicle’s 250-mile range, though, would put it in competition with other EV models like the Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Model 3.

The rumor mill is speculating that this crossover will be based on Mitsubishi’s eX Concept vehicle, which debuted in October of last year at the Tokyo Motor Show. It was confirmed in March of 2016 that there would be a production model based on the Japanese carmaker’s electric concept car—a production model that will give the Nissan Juke a run for its money. This model is expected to combine its electric powertrain with an all-wheel-drive system and a variety of automated driving and active safety systems.
