A Preview of the 2018 Chevy Traverse, Spotted Under Heavy Camouflage

Currently in its first generation, the Chevrolet Traverse is heavily built on the same platform as the GMC Acadia. However, for the second generation, Chevy’s three-row crossover plans to take its first steps away from being an Acadia clone by riding on a longer wheelbase (although the two will still remain similar under the body panels).

So, how does this make for a substantial change? Well, when the second-generation Acadia entered the limelight earlier this year, its weight had be lowered substantially, partly by making the rig a fair amount smaller. That longer wheel base on the new Traverse means that, rather than reducing the SUV, Chevrolet will likely go longer. This is possibly a move to make the Traverse more appealing to larger families, to whom the crossover’s standard third row of seating would be a blessing (the new, smaller Acadia is a little small for the third row).

As such, it seems that the new Traverse will stay about the same size as the current model, and build on the current generation’s decade-old sales strength.

The new Traverse is likely to feature a V6 engine—on a larger platform, the Acadia’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine will probably be too small, but it is possible that the GMC’s available 3.6-liter V6 could end up as the new Traverse’s powertrain.

Car and Driver recently snapped some pictures of the Traverse in testing, but due to the heavy, heavy camouflage over the body panels, the only thing we can tell is the wheelbase (and that it will, in fact, bow to tradition by having windows).
