most popular car in 2014So here’s a bit of somewhat surprising news: through the first quarter of the year, the Honda Accord is the most popular car in 2014 based on (Honda’s analysis of) new vehicle registration date from IHS Automotive. Not only is it the most popular car in America, it’s also the most popular vehicle, meaning that it has thus far staved off the powerful F-150.

“We’re thrilled to be leading the pack in the first lap around the track in 2014,” said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division. “In a business environment marked by intense competition and heavy incentives, we want to thank our Honda customers for the trust they continue to place in our products.”

According to Honda’s interpretations of the data, the Accord is not just the most popular car in 2014, but also the most popular vehicle. Further, the Civic sits in third, and the CR-V follows as the fourth-most popular. The number two spot belongs to the Ford F-150, who will be looking to defend in 2014 not only its 37-year hold on the title of best-selling truck, but its 32-year-long reign as best-selling vehicle in America overall.

The Accord boasted retail registrations of 78,355 through March, which gives them a lead of less than 1,000 units over the F-150. The Civic logged 70,677 registrations through March, and the CR-V grew its retail registrations by 3.9 percent to a first quarter total of 67,773.

Honda also reports that their Odyssey leads the pack among minivans with retail registrations totaling 27,748 units.

Whether the Accord will be able to sustain its first quarter run and hold on to the title of most popular car in 2014 remains to be seen, but it can be guaranteed that it has its work cut out for it if it looks to topple the giant that is the F-150.
