Do you own the 1996 Honda Accord? Might want to invest in a Club. And a LoJack. And a security bear in the trunk.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Some things, it seems, are inevitable: death, taxes, and the Honda Accord and Civic topping the NCIB Hot Wheels list. Two of Honda’s best-selling vehicles were also the two cars most coveted by thieves in 2013, topping the list with 53,995 and 45,001 thefts, respectively.

Reason enough to be frightened that your new Accord or Civic are going to be targeted by thieves? Not necessarily. In fact, of the 53,995 Accord thefts reported in 2013, the most recent model year was 1997. The most stolen model was the 1996 (8,166 thefts), followed by the 1994 (7,667), 1997 (7,367), 1995 (6,266), 1992 (4,307), 1991 (4,070), 1993 (3,858), and 1990 (3,000).

Similarly, the most stolen Civic was the 1998 model (5,978), followed by the 1997 (5,357) and the 2000 (5,042).

According to the NCIB Hot Wheels presser, the FBI is predicting a 3.2 percent decrease in total national car thefts when all 2013 numbers come together, with estimates putting that number just under 700,000—which would be a 50 percent reduction from 1991 and the lowest total since 1967.

“The drop in thefts is good news for all of us,” said NICB President and CEO Joe Wehrle in a press release. “But it still amounts to a vehicle being stolen every 45 seconds and losses of over $4 billion a year. That’s why we applaud the vehicle manufacturers for their efforts to improve anti-theft technology and pledge to continue to work with our insurance company members and law enforcement to identify and seek vigorous prosecution of the organized criminal rings responsible for so many of these thefts.”

Of course, a lot of the drop in overall car thefts can be attributed to safety and security technology that comes standard on new vehicles made by Honda and all other manufacturers. This begs the question: of the 2013 model year vehicles, which were the most commonly stolen?

Here’s good news for Honda owners: the Accord makes the list once again, only this time in 23rd place with 276 thefts. The most stolen? The 2013 Nissan Altima, which was stolen 810 times.

On the bright side, according to the LoJack study released in May, the Accord is also the most recovered vehicle overall and of the 2013 model year vehicles.
