Alan Mulally Hates Retirement, Joins Google Board of Directors

Retirement for highly-influential figures in tech- and engineering-related industries is kinda like death for comic book characters. Oh, you mean to tell me that Marvel is going to kill Wolverine? Yeah, we’ll be sure to check back in three weeks for the Return of Wolverine arc. By that same token, nobody really believed that Alan Mulally would just go hang out on a beach somewhere on an island drinking mai tais for the rest of his days. Lo and behold, the former Ford CEO shocked very few on Monday when he was announced as the latest member of Google’s Board of Directors.
“I am honored to serve on the board of a global iconic company that is dedicated to enhancing our lives,” Mulally told Google. “I look forward to working together with the Google board and management team to continue to deliver their compelling vision.”
Mulally, being the notorious hater of days off that he is, began his appointment to Google’s Audit Committee on July 9, meaning his retirement barely lasted a week. Mulally will likely draw upon his eight years’ worth of experiences as Ford’s head man, as well as his five years as Executive VP of Boeing and time spent sitting on various advisory boards, for whatever it is that his duties entail.
Mulally seems to be the obvious choice for an advisory role in the development of Google’s autonomous car, but we will have to wait and see just what plans Google has for the former Ford CEO.
