All-New Buick Excelle GT Debuts in China
Shanghai GM has launched the all-new Buick Excelle GT in China with an elaborate ceremony held in Sanya, Hainan. The Excelle GT is the indirect successor to the Buick Riviera II concept car, combining mid-size sedan utility with sporty styling.
“Buick has leveraged its global resources to create a car to please progressive, trendsetting consumers,” said Shanghai GM President Wang Yongqing. “The all-new Excelle GT is leading Buick’s new mid-range sedan strategy to strengthen the brand’s leadership in the important market segment.”
The Buick Excelle GT comes in nine different variations, priced between RMB 109,900 and RMB 159,900, or $17,530-$25,500 USD.
The new Excelle GT—built on a new body-frame made out of 65% high-strength steel—replaces the outgoing model, ostensibly a rebadged version of the Opel Astra/Buick Verano, but that old Excelle GT will return to China sometime later this year as…wait for it…the new Verano.
The new Excelle GT will be powered by either a 1.4-liter turbo that is mated to a seven-speed dual clutch and generates 144 horsepower, or a 1.5-liter mated to a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic that generates 114 horsepower. It will be made available in six exterior colors: Snow White, Deep Blue, Chinese Red, Pearl Black, Moonlight Silver, and Topaz Brown.
