All-New Honda CR-V Hybrid Debuts at Auto Shanghai

The 2017 Honda CR-V has a starting MSRP of $24,045 and earns up to 32 mpg on the highway

Today at Auto Shanghai 2017, Honda exhibited the world premiere of the CR-V Hybrid, the brand’s all-new SUV model for the Chinese market.

The Honda CR-V Hybrid features a Honda Sport Hybrid i-MMD two-motor hybrid system, as well as a full complement of features that includes the Honda Sensing suite of safety technologies. The new model is scheduled to go on sale in China in the second half of this year.

The CR-V Hybrid is part of a broader effort by Honda to continue electrifying its product portfolio. Honda is also promising to begin sales of another China-exclusive electric vehicle in the year 2018. The automaker has remained unclear about whether the CR-V Hybrid will eventually find its way to the American market, but many speculate that it will eventually find its way to the states.

“With a goal to make two-thirds of our global automobile sales from electrified vehicles by around 2030, Honda will pursue the development of electrification technologies more speedily,” said Honda President Takahiro Hachigo. “In China, where dynamic change is happening, we will continue proposing new forms of mobility products by utilizing our global and local development capability to the fullest extent and quickly introducing new technologies such as electrification and intelligence technologies.”

Honda’s exhibit at this year’s Shanghai auto show also included the Chinese debut of the NeuV, an artificial intelligence-equipped EV concept; the new CR-V with a 1.5-liter turbo engine, which will go on sale in the second half of 2017 along with they Hybrid; the UR-V, a large SUV launched in March; and the Avancier 240 Turbo equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo engine, which also went on sale last month.

“In China, we are required to attain the world’s top-level targets in all three areas of making emissions cleaner, improving fuel economy and electrifying our products,” said Yasuhide Mizuno, President of Honda Motor China Investment Company. “We want to attain the targets faster and at a higher level than anyone else, and we want to do so with our original technologies.

“Toward this end, we have decided to introduce a China-exclusive electric model in 2018, and we will further accelerate our initiatives in electrifying our products. Including the introduction of CR-V Hybrid, which we unveiled today, we will continue accommodating the needs of our Chinese customers by pursuing the electrification of mobility products in China speedily.”
