It’s been widely rumored that Mitsubishi is looking to ditch the sedan/car game altogether and instead just focus on SUVs. The fact that the Japanese automaker will reportedly revive the Montero name for an SUV here in the States seems to further confirm that business plan.

The all-new Mitsubishi Montero will debut this summer for the European market, but it will eventually ship overseas to those in the US who want the power and versatility of such an SUV. (Note, in Europe, the Montero will be branded as the Pajero.)

We don’t have much information on the new Montero quite yet, but we do know that it’ll be based on the GC-PHEV concept that Mitsubishi has been touting the last couple of years. That means it’s very likely we’ll see a plug-in hybrid powertrain available for the Montero, though it isn’t likely to be the only one offered. That powertrain included the electric motor paired with a 3.0-liter V6. The engine was mated to an eight-speed transmission, and the concept was on a four-wheel-drive platform and utilized a lithium-ion battery pack.

Rumor has it that the Montero could arrive stateside as soon as next year, branded as a 2017 model.
