The EPA has confirmed that an AWD Dodge Challenger is on the way

Unfortunately, the Challenger Hellcat won’t be getting the all-wheel drive treatment because of its overly large V8 engine

While the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro are busy trying to play catch up with the Dodge Challenger Hellcat and its supercharged V8 engine, FCA is trying something totally unique in the world of muscle cars by developing an all-wheel drive (AWD) version of its Challenger performance car.

A production version of the AWD Challenger has been rumored ever since the Challenger GT AWD concept premiered at the 2015 SEMA show. However, the EPA’s official website has all but confirmed this new muscle car after it listed fuel economy figures for a 2017 Dodge Challenger with AWD.

Expected to be called the 2017 Dodge Challenger GT, this machine will yield an EPA-estimated 18 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined. It should be noted these figures apply to an AWD Challenger equipped with a 305-horsepower V6 and eight-speed automatic transmission. Like the Dodge Charger, it’s not expected that V8-equipped Challengers will be able to come with all-wheel driving systems because of space restrictions.

The Dodge Challenger GT should provide better grip and traction during times of poor weather conditions, but that does come at the expense of fuel efficiency. That’s because the rear-wheel drive version of the Challenger using the same powertrain yields 19 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

In addition to this new all-wheel drive Challenger GT, it’s also been reported that Dodge is working on a new wide-body version of the muscle car called the Challenger ADR, which could sit even higher in the model lineup than the high-performance Hellcat.

If rumors from around the web turn out to be true, both of these new models could make appearances at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show.
