Ally Financial New Car Smell NAIAS

Detroit is abuzz today with all of the news out of the North American International Auto Show. While much of it is from car manufacturers, there is one a booth from a bank receiving a fair amount of attention because of how it smells.

You read that correctly, the booth actually smells. And it is on purpose.

Ally Financial, an online bank directing some of its efforts to a dedicated Auto loan section, has a booth it’s calling the “New Car Smell” exhibit. Eight different fragrances are available for show attendees to sample, representing eight different types of car drivers on the roads today. Take a look at the scents below, and figure out which one matches you and your driving style (and try to not be offended by some of the sweeping generalizations).

  • City Compact (43% Cappuccino, 29% Hairspray, 25% Lipstick, 3% Yoga Mat)
  • Rugged SUV (57% Mud, 21% Tree Bark, 16% Sweat, 6% Roadkill)
  • Eco Friendly Hybrid (80% Water, 14% Grass, 5% Tofu, 1% Smug)
  • Pick-Up Truck (57% Bonfire, 21% Axle Grease, 16% Flannel, 6% Beard)
  • Luxury Coupe (67% Plush leather, 28% Shoe Polish, 4% Caviar, 1% Benjamins)
  • Muscle Car (52% Nitrous Oxide, 20% Testosterone, 20% Burnt Rubber, 8% Brimstone)
  • Trusty Sedan (40% Pleather, 35% Pine, 22% Instant Coffee, 3% Fanny Pack)
  • Family Wagon (44% Baby Wipes, 31% Stain Remover, 22% Crayon, 3% Regret)

For the hipsters that don’t think they fit in to one of the eight categories (or you’re a man who drives a compact), the booth has an iPad to create custom “virtual” scents to share online. Before I would settle on a scent, however, I think I would need some clarification on what some of them are. For example, does a fanny pack smell like sweat or something worse? Does smug have a scent similar to smog? Finally, what does regret smell like?

If finding the perfect scent is snot your thing, the Ally Financial booth in Hall B of the Cobo Center also has the “Ally Auto Alley”, which allows visitors to use iPads to cusomize their dream car and share it on social media for their chance to win a trip to Cancun, Mexico.
