Amazon’s Patented Recharging Drones Could Solve Current Problems with EV Technology

As electric vehicle technology continues to accelerate, two key challenges have surfaced: the availability of charging stations and the limited range inherent to EV models. Budding news from Amazon reveals a potential answer to both of these dilemmas. The company recently received a patent for mobile drones that could provide on-demand recharging services to electric vehicles.
The drone design is based on three core company values, as Amazon’s CEO, Jeff Bezos, articulates: “We’ve had three big ideas at Amazon that we’ve stuck with. They’re the reason we’re successful: Put the customer first. Invent. And be patient.”

According to the patent itself, the drones will have the capacity to communicate with EVs from a distance, via the use of servers equipped with technology sensitive enough to detect when a certain vehicle’s battery is running low. Where the EV is stuck in a swathe of traffic or rushing along in an isolated area, Amazon’s drones will travel to the vehicle in need to provide a battery recharge in a timely manner.
Considering that the U.S. currently has around 45,000 EV battery charges available to the public, Amazon’s new design promises to make owning EVs more practical than ever.
The company has yet to reveal more details about how the company plans to implement its drone service. However, with such a stable track record of prioritizing customer needs and offering them with streamlined, intuitive products and solutions, it’s safe to say that Amazon’s contribution to the EV tech world will be a significant one.
