Andy Palmer Named Aston Martin CEO

Aston Martin has ended its nine-month leadership void by announcing the appointment of former Nissan Executive Vice President and Chief Planning Officer Andy Palmer to the position of CEO. Aston Martin has subsisted without a CEO since Ulrich Bez retired at the end of 2013.

In a statement, the Aston Martin board of shareholders said (perhaps simultaneously), “We’re delighted that Andy will join us as our new CEO at this important time at Aston Martin. Andy’s wealth of experience on the global automotive stage in marketing and sales, engineering and technology, and luxury and brand management will be instrumental in taking Aston Martin forward through its most significant and ambitious period of investment to date.”

Palmer’s appointment will begin around the beginning of October, which is when the transition out of Nissan is expected to conclude. Palmer leaves Nissan after spending 13 years with the automaker, and he will ultimately be replaced as CPO by Philippe Klein.

Palmer’s appointment indeed couldn’t come at a more vital time for the company: they are in the midst of developing a new platform that will carry them into the next decade, and they are expanding their relationship with engine provider and minority owner Daimler.

Palmer’s time with Nissan was one of notable openness, and the enthusiasm and openness he displayed in discussing projects such as the Infiniti Q30 hatchback will likely serve Aston Martin well in their attempts to overtake their large premium rivals.
