Mitsubishi has had a considerable hit on its hands in Europe and Japan with the Outlander PHEV, which has quickly jumped into the position of the best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle in all of the UK. Looking to expand upon that success, and increasing demand for fuel efficient utility vehicle, Mitsubishi plans to bring PHEV versions of the ASX compact crossover and Pajero/Shogun SUV to the market in the year 2017 and 2018, respectively.

During an interview with Automotive News Europe at the 2014 Paris Auto Show, Mitsubishi CEO Osamu Masuko said that plug-in hybrids are becoming “well accepted by the market” and indicated that the time for proliferation is nigh.

With the next-gen ASX launching sometime in 2016, it’s expected that an ASX PHEV will follow suit in 2017. A plug-in hybrid version of the Pajero will be introduced in the next generation, which is scheduled to roll out sometime in 2018.

Thus far, we have no other details as to what the ASX PHEV and Pajero PHEV’s powertrain will consist, though it’s a safe bet that it will improve on the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid’s 121-horsepower 2.0-liter engine/60kW electric motor powerplant.
