Audi RS7 Piloted Concept Goes 140 MPH Without a Driver
As the automotive world takes tentative steps toward a future where autonomous cars are the norm, Audi’s burning a path and accelerating past the field. A month after the Audi A7 Traffic Jam Pilot earned the first driving permit for a driverless car in California, Audi brought its RS7 Piloted Concept to the Hockenheimring for a bit of a show.
And what a show it turned out to be. In front of a full crowd—gathered there to watch Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) final—the RS7 Piloted Concept flung itself around the track at speeds up to 140 miles per hour without a single living being in the cabin.
The RS7 Piloted Concept made a flawless run around the 4.5km Hockenheim circuit, making hairpin turns and taking perfect brake lines without any hesitation, and utilizing its 560 horsepower to achieve a complete lap in a little more than two minutes.
If automated driving is the way of the future, then it can be reasonably expected that all automakers will be following in Audi’s tire tracks.
