Toyota is known worldwide for its hybrid vehicles—particularly for the Prius lineup—and Australia is no exception. In the land down under, Toyota is releasing a new addition to the hybrid family in the form of the Corolla hybrid. This new hybrid model boasts a ton of upgrades, the most notable being its range of 1,097 kilometers, or 682 miles, on a single tank of gas.

This impressive range is an increase by almost 280 km, or 174 miles, and these numbers are in spite of the fact that the Corolla hybrid has a 45-liter fuel tank—5 liters smaller than the gasoline-powered Corolla. In addition, the Corolla hybrid boasts a combined output of 134 horsepower through its 1.8-liter internal combustion engine and electric motor combination along with an E-CVT transmission.

While some hybrids lose interior space due to the awkward placement of the battery pack, the Australian Corolla hybrid retains its 360 liters of cargo space thanks to the battery’s location under the rear seat. In addition, the Corolla hybrid offers 16-inch alloy wheels, black fabric upholstery, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, navigation, a backup camera, seven airbags, stability and traction control, and a choice between eight exterior paint colors.

The addition of a hybrid model to Toyota Australia’s Corolla lineup is thanks largely in part to excellent sales of that model. The Corolla remains one of Toyota’s best-selling models in Australia, and the hybrid addition will provide drivers with an affordable option that’s bigger than the Prius c but not quite on the same level as the recently redesigned Prius.

The Toyota Corolla hybrid will retail for AU$26,990 (approx. US$19,940), which is just AU$1,000 more than the top trim level of the Prius c city car.
