History

Washington, DC came into being in 1790 with the Congressional passing of the Residence Act, which approved the building of a national capital on the Potomac River. It received its name on September 9, 1791 after the current president (and first president) of the United States, George Washington. Since its establishment, DC has been the home of 44 U.S. Presidents and countless members of both the Congress and Supreme Court. Many of the most memorable events in our country’s history took place in the city, something that you will definitely notice as you walk the city’s streets.
