Blake Griffin Gets Into the Zone Again and Plays Chess with Kia Optima Drivers
Basketball star Blake Griffin puts his one-of-a-kind humor on display again in the newest Kia Optima commercial
If you don’t regularly follow the NBA, you may not be familiar with Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin, who is one of the most laid back people in all of pro sports. It’s probably for this reason that the Kia brand chose him to be one of its spokespeople.
Griffin has starred in Kia commercials for years and he even jumped over a Kia Optima to win the 2011 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, but the theme of his most recent Kia commercials have involved regular people joining him in the “zone.” To viewers, the “zone’ is presented as a place where people go when they can stay in the moment, focus, and relax.

While the ultra-athletic Griffin is able to reach the “zone” through dominating on the basketball court, his co-stars in the new Kia commercials have gotten to the this space by simply driving the new Kia Optima, which Griffin compliments as having a comfortable and spacious cabin.
The interior of the 2016 Kia Optima mid-size sedan comes with many premium features such as quilted leather upholstery, air conditioning, and a six-speaker sound system with a USB port, CD player, and satellite radio. In addition, new electrical power-steering assist technology and adaptive cruise control make it easier for the driver and passengers to get into the “zone.”
Griffin and his Clippers teammates are currently competing against the Portland Trailblazers in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Hopefully—for Griffin’s sake—the Blazers won’t take offense to his new Kia commercial in which he compares playing basketball to a game of chess, as well as including a metaphor inferring that his opponents are just pawns in his path to victory.
