BMW 2 Series Earns 2014 Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS

The BMW 2 Series has received plaudits for performance, refinement, and pretty much all of the aspects folks have come to expect from BMWs. You can now add 2014 Top Safety Pick+ to the list of reasons why the 2 Series is among the best that the industry has to offer.

2 Series models built from July on and equipped with optional front crash prevention technology earned top honors from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety after it achieved scores of “Good” in the IIHS’ small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats crashworthiness tests.

While all that would have been good enough to earn the 2 Series Top Safety Pick honors alone, it took an advanced score in front crash prevention to earn that extra little plus. The 228i tested by IIHS included the optional Driver Assistance Plus package, which features Park Distance Control; rear view camera; speed limit information in the instrument cluster; and Active Driving Assistant.

Out of a possible six points, the 228i earned four: one for forward collision warning; two for reducing impact speed by 10 mph in the low-speed autobrake test; and one for reducing impact speed 7 mph in the high-speed autobrake test. This score was good for an “advanced” evaluation score, slotting the 2 Series among the safest vehicles on the road today.
