BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo Has Niche Appeal

Decrease Font Size Increase Font Size Text Size Print This Page

BMW is experimenting again and this time the result is a surprisingly roomy, convenient, and easy-to-handle hatchback. It’s a questionable move on BMW’s behalf. The 3 series Gran Turismo is a cross between a sedan and a station wagon, and most buyers will be able to find just what they need with either—which makes this new model perhaps a little too niche.

Nonetheless, BMW has obviously gone to great lengths to make this a desirable car. Perhaps the greatest appeal is the shocking amount of room it offers, which families are sure to appreciate. The GT is 3 inches taller and 8 inches longer than the 3 Series sedan, granting it more trunk space than the 3 Series sports wagon and allowing the backseat to comfortably accommodate three people.

The extra size does come at the cost of some agility, but not so much that you can’t still have a little fun. The GT’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine can push the car from 0 to 60 in 5.4 seconds and it comes with a chassis built to support a bit of sport driving.

Pricing hasn’t been announced just yet, but we will see the car in showrooms in late summer.
