BMW 3 Series Mexico

BMW has its eyes on the North American Free Trade Agreement region, or NAFTA, and this month the automaker broke ground on a new plant in Mexico. Thanks to NAFTA, cars built at the Mexican facility will be easily sent to the US and Canada. Recent trade agreements with the EU and Mercosur (or select South American) countries also opens the doors wide for exports from this plant.

The plant in Mexico shall be called BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí, and its main focus will be on the BMW 3 Series. The auto group has plans for the plant to be ready to produce the 2019 model year, and the facility will be built as a full plant. That means that the plant will not only assemble cars, but will also feature a paint shop and body shop alongside the assembly lines. A team of 25 engineers actually began their training later last year, and soon BMW will facilitate training programs in local colleges to teach production mechanics and automotive mechatronics to prepare their new workforce.

Currently, the BMW group operates 31 production facilities in 14 countries on four continents. Americans in the United States should not fear that the new Mexican plant will take away Mexican jobs. Actually, BMW has recently committed one billion dollars in its current Spartanburg plant to increase production to 450,000 units, and it is the largest plant in the BMW Production Network last year. This investment, and the achievements of the staff there, will insure that BMW will remain in the US for the foreseeable future.
