BMW Ends 2017 with a Strong Month of Sales in December

Strong December sales helped improve BMW's numbers for its overall annual sales during 2017

BMW finished off 2017 with a strong month of sales in December. Sales for the BMW brand were up by 4.3% last month, with a total of 34,253 vehicles sold.

21,580 of those vehicles were passenger cars. Sales for the passenger car segment were up by 5.7% in December.

Among the BMW passenger cars that succeeded in terms of sales last month was the BMW 5 Series. 5 Series sales were reportedly up by 124%, with a total of 4,743 units sold.

Meanwhile, the light truck segment also performed well last month. Sales for this segment came in at 12,673 units, 2.1% more than the previous December.

The X1 and X5 were the big stars of BMW’s light truck lineup. X5 sales came in at 6,847 vehicles, a 10% increase, while X1 sales were up by 6.4%.

More than half of the light trucks sold by BMW in December were X5 models

Year-over-year, BMW’s light trucks still performed better than its sedans. While annual sedan sales were down by 3.4%, light truck sales were only down by a slight 0.4%.

BMW found that by the end of the year, 6% of its total U.S. sales were comprised of electric models. That means sales for BMW’s electric vehicles were up by 31.2% year-over-year.

Even MINI sales managed to do pretty well last month

MINI also managed to perform better than in previous months during December. BMW sold 4,611 MINI vehicles last month, and compared to the 4,658 MINI models it sold in December of 2016, that’s only a 1% decrease.

Annually, MINI sales were a little worse for the wear. Sales for BMW’s sub-brand were down by 9.5% at the end of 2017.

The BMW brand proper managed to sell 305,685 vehicles in 2017. With 313,174 vehicle sold throughout 2016, sales were only down by 2.4% during 2017.
