BMW Films

Remember way back in early 2014 when we announced that BMW Films was going to make a comeback? Well, more than two years later, and we finally have some details about what’s coming up from the automaker’s artsy arm. It seems as if waiting was a good thing, because this month we were rewarded with the knowledge that Clive Owen, the original BMW Films star, will be returning as well.

“The Hire” was the original short films released by BMW back in 2001 and 2002. Clive Own starred as “the Driver” in eight films about 10 minutes each, and were directed by the likes of Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Guy Richie, and Ang Lee. In front of the camera, Owen was joined by actors like Gary Oldman, Madonna, Stellan Skarsgård, Forest Whitaker, and Marilyn Manson. BMW is proud to say that the films got about 100 million views on BMWFilms.com, which might not seem like a lot, but it was in the days prior to YouTube.

The new BMW Films series will be called “The Escape”, and is presented to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the original series. According to the automaker, Clive Owen will share the screen with Jon Bernthal, Dakota Fanning, and Vera Farmiga. Academy Award® nominated director Neill Blomkamp, who was the filmmaker behind Elysium and District 9, will help bring the latest installment to life. As far as we can tell, “The Escape” will only be a single episode. Maybe if it is successful, BMW will return with either more episodes of this franchise, or new stories altogether.
