Priced between the BMW X1 and X3, the BMW X2 is the newest, and smallest, entry for the BMW X series

The latest addition to the BMW X Series is also its smallest entry

With each passing year, the lineup of BMW’s SUVs, or “Sports Activity Vehicles” as the German brand calls them, seems to grow even larger. Still, one aspect of the lineup has remained consistent: the BMW X1 is the smallest of BMW’s SAVs.

Well, not anymore, thanks to the introduction of BMW’s latest vehicle: the 2018 BMW X2.

BMW unveiled the latest addition to its X vehicle lineup during the Tokyo Motor Show earlier this week. Unsurprisingly, the BMW X2 is set to be priced between the X1 and the X3, though no official price has been announced as of yet.

Despite this, the BMW X2 is actually smaller and more streamlined than the BMW X1. The X2 is 3.2 inches shorter and 2.8 inches lower than the X1, reportedly to give the X2 a more dynamic appearance.

Though it may be small, the X2 is built to perform

Although the X2 may be a small crossover, it is designed to be one tough set of wheels. Features like hill-descent control and a standard xDrive all-wheel drive indicate that the X2 is designed to handle well in nearly any terrain.

In terms of its powertrain, the 2018 BMW X2 comes standard with both an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo engine, capable of producing 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. BMW claims that this helps the X2 to achieve a 0 to 60 time of 6.3 seconds.

As far as optional features for the inaugural BMW X2 go, drivers can opt into the safety features of BMW’s Driver Assistance Package, which includes forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Other options like adaptive cruise control and a panoramic roof are also available.

“The BMW X2 represents an expression of modern and extrovert vehicle dynamics,” explains Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President of BMW Group Design. “Its standalone vehicle concept brings a new, fresh and exciting facet of the BMW to the compact segment.”

The 2018 BMW X2 will be available starting next spring, undoubtedly adding even more confusion to BMW’s current alphanumerical naming schemes.
