Emergency Response BMW i3

Luxury vehicles have slowly started inching into police fleets around the world, most notably in the Middle East. Usually these vehicles are seen as a novelty, but it seems as if luxury manufacturer BMW wants to be taken seriously as an emergency responder. At the RETTmobil show in Fulda, Germany, which is focused on emergency rescue teams, BMW has trotted out customized vehicles ready to be put to the test.

If you were hoping for or expecting a BMW fire truck, don’t get too excited. While the manufacturer is steering clear of the larger response vehicles, it seems to be committed to the smaller support vehicles that arrive at an accident or fire. The range of vehicles on display in Fulda is varied in form and function, with one motorcycle and four traditional cars undergoing the upgrade and transformation into mobile units. The BMW i3, BMW X3, and the BMW X1 were outfitted with the communications gear and tools necessary to be mobile command units for fire crews. The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is ready to serve medics and doctors on the field, accompanied by the BMW R 1200 motorcycle that is also ready to get doctors where they need to go fast.

Everyone remembers BMW for its luxury and craftsmanship; however, the automaker’s notorious performance brand means that these vehicles might look pretty, but under their hoods are powertrains ready to perform. Some readers might laugh at the idea of their governments shelling out for BMW emergency response vehicles, but in truth they would be extremely reliable and as up to the task as any American vehicle. Maybe they’ll be hitting our streets soon.
