BMW 2002 Hommage

This year, BMW is celebrating its big centennial. The automaker threw a huge party in Munich to celebrate, and it has plenty of events planned throughout the year. This birthday is very important, but the brand is also celebrating a milestone for one of its most iconic vehicles. That’s right, the legendary BMW 2002 turbo is turning 50.

To celebrate this very special model and all that it accomplished on the track, BMW is rolling out the BMW 2002 Hommage at the famous Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. The car plays tribute to the model that many at BMW and around the world consider to be the vehicle that made the brand the performance name it is today. At the time it rolled off the assembly line, the BMW 2002 turbo was the first series-produced car in Europe equipped with a turbo.

The most obvious reference to BMW 2002 Turbo’s 50th anniversary on the Hommage vehicle is the gold headlight reflectors and other accents for its “golden” anniversary. The iconic BMW kidney grille is the star of the front of the vehicle, and the body’s bluish-silver color, called Space Race Metal, helps the accents stand out.  Its molded wheel arches are dramatic, and coupled with the vehicle’s extremely low road clearance they make the BMW 2002 Turbo Hommage have a commanding presence on the road.

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este runs through this weekend, May 20th-22nd, so if you’re not in Munich, you might have missed your chance for now. Keep your eyes peeled, though, because this vehicle is so beautiful we can’t imagine that BMW won’t trot it out again to celebrate the BMW 2002 turbo’s birthday.
