It’s hard to read the news about cars and not see something about autonomous driving. If the forecasts are to be believed, we could be seeing cars that drive themselves on the road in the very near future. While many automakers are rolling out technology to guide cars on the highways, BMW is looking further ahead, focusing on a completely self-driving vehicle.

To create the car of the future, BMW has announced this month that it intends to have completely autonomous cars on the road by 2021, and it has partnered with Intel and Mobileye to get the job done.

The car BMW rolls out for 2021 will supposedly not need a driver’s input at all, beyond entering a destination. Intel is well-known in the world of computers, and Israel’s Mobileye is a quiet force in the world of self-driving cars. According to TechCrunch, Mobileye is the force behind Tesla’s Autopilot systems, creating the car sensors and technology needed for a car to read the roadways. The companies are hoping to have a vehicle to begin road testing with as early as next year.

Not only will owners have self-driving cars, but there are reports that BMW will use the technology to manage a fleet of cars for ride-sharing. Since they drive themselves, the automaker would have control of the cars, and would have no need for middlemen from companies like Uber or Lyft.

BMW, Intel, and Mobileye would also be open to selling the technology to other companies, according to TechCrunch. Less human error on the roadways will cut down on accidents and collisions and make highways and surface streets safer. Hopefully the team behind the project will finish sooner than projected.
