BMW Unveils 2016 7 Series Design & Details Online Following Leaks

BMW has finally–officially–unveiled its redesigned, newest 7 Series sedan. Its world premiere occurred online today from Munich, as the automaker stuck with its intended June 10th public unveiling. Although by now, multiple leaks have given away most of the surprise.
The show from BMW Welt began with a live orchestra-led video montage of the history of the 7 Series, followed by a brief speech from Chairman Harald Krüger. Without wasting time, the orchestra returned for the unmasking of the 2016 7 Series–a black 730d and a grey 750 Li, with the cameras focusing on the headlights that were inspired by the i8.
Krüger returned to the stage to discuss the individual customization options and the nature of BMW’s luxury philosophy. He announced the 7 Series is a “window into the future of BMW,” the lightest car in its segment. Other BMW exectuives took to the stage to discuss design changes, the Innovation Package, upcoming remote parking feature, and hint at the electric-hybrid 740e coming next year. Clearly this redesign is ready to compete with Audi.
Redesigned BMW Details Reveal the “Future of BMW”
The BMW 7 Series had been known as a heavy, slow-moving tank, but using new EfficientLightweigh chassis and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic, the 7 Series is estimated to drop nearly 300 pounds (though some early rumors put that number closer to 1,000).
Details on the design and trims for the 7 Series leaked earlier this week via BMW Australia’s online configurator. Engine options include:
- 730d or 730d xDrive with 3.0-liter inline-six diesel
- 740i with six-cylinder B58
- 750i xDrive with twin-turbo V8
- 750i with 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8
Horsepower will range from 250 to 440 horsepower. Wheel designs vary and measure from 17 to 20 inches in diameter. M Sport Package, adaptive LED headlights, and Driving Assistance Plus will be available.

Colors choices for the 7 Series include Carbon Black, Black Sapphire, Glacier Silver, Alpine White, Imperial Blue, Sophisto Grey, Mineral White, Singapore Grey, Cashmere Silver, Arctic Grey, Jatoba, Magellan Grey, and Black College.
Pricing is estimated to exceed $100,000 MSRP on all trims. The 7 Series will debut in person this September at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show followed by a market launch at end of October.
