The new BMW X4 is an SUV that—wait, no, scratch that. The X4 is a crossover made to—no, that’s not right either. Sorry about that, but it is surprisingly hard to figure out just what the X4 is trying to be. It almost looks like a raised, slightly engorged four-door coupe. And although that may sound unusual, we’re finding out it is by no means bad. [ See more BMW X4 pictures in our gallery below ]

Regardless of what it is, it certainly has the looks to turn heads. The authentic design injects the X4 full of character, but as exciting as the crossover-SUV-coupe thing is to look at, the real thrill is in the driver’s seat. It is, after all, what BMW calls a Sports Activity Coupe (we’ll just call it an SAC from now on, then), which is meant to suggest engine power, driving pleasure, and utility for those with an active lifestyle, though the X4 in particular seems to focus on the first two more than the latter.

Three petrol engines and three diesel engines are available with the BMW X4, which is kind of a lot so we won’t be listing them all here. Power outputs range from 184 to 313 horsepower, and all are equipped with TwinPower Turbo Technology designed to maximize performance, increase refinement, and reduce fuel consumption.

One of the engines, a 3.0-liter six-cylinder, even produces an impressive 465 lb-ft of torque, but still manages to achieve fuel-sipping economy thanks to BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology package, which includes Auto Start Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration, and optional reduced-rolling-resistance tyres to reduce CO2 emissions.
