Recommended by Reader’s Digest Writer Ariel Zeitlin, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” by Barbara Robinson and narrated by the incomparable Elaine Stritch, tells the tale of a group of children lacking in parental supervision who decide to take into their own hands the annual Christmas pageant. Zeitlin says this story will have your family giggling with delight over the misadventures and shenanigans of this “funny, rotten, larcenous family.”

Even if your road trip is super short – like 12 minutes – you can still entertain your family, especially your littlest ones, with the classic, heartfelt tale of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” by Dr. Seuss, narrated by Walter Matthau.

The “Harry Potter” Series by J.K. Rowling is a favorite for my family, and because Rowling was kind enough to write seven books, listening to the series can make even the longest of road trips bearable. This one comes with a warning, though. I was so enthralled in the story that I missed our exit, and we ended up driving about an hour out of our way. At least, it was an extra hour we could listen to Harry Potter!

A story sure to entertain both parents and kids for about three hours is “When Santa Fell to Earth” by Cornelia Funke, according to NextAdvisor.com, which summarizes the story as a “contemporary favorite” about “Twinklestar the reindeer and Santa’s mission to save Christmas from the Grinch-like Gerold Geronimus Goblynch.”

And, of course, if you’re looking for a Christmas classic, you can’t go wrong with “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, which comes in several formats and is narrated by a variety of performers.
