Black is the top favorite vehicle color in Britain right now. During 2017, more than half a million British buyers chose a black vehicle.

But this hue isn’t popular for the reason that you might think. While some people choose this shade because it symbolizes their passion for Batman or their gravitation toward the dark side, many Brits favor this color due to its low maintenance.

“There was a strong trend for white cars in the UK[…] White cars are perceived as being harder to keep clean and people’s lives are busier than ever. That’s definitely a factor,” said Karim Mussilhy, sales manager with auto retailer Syner Group.

This trend topples the domination that white vehicles has had on the market up until this point. According to the UK’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, only 482,099 white cars registered, which is 15% less than just two years ago. In 2015, a total of 564,393 white cars registered with the organization.

Considering Britain’s trend for monochromatic car colors, the prominence of black vehicles isn’t really surprising. Black, gray and white vehicles comprised 60% of the 2.54 million autos registered in Britain just last year.

If you’re looking to buy a new vehicle in the near future, industry experts concur that choosing a monochrome color is the way to go. “Plainer, safer colors deliver better resale values because the cars will appeal to a broader group of buyers,” said Jim Holder, editorial director of What Car? magazine. “This year’s figures show few signs of that trend changing despite buyers being offered more choices of car colors than ever.”

We’ll have to wait to see whether or not black continues to outrank other monochromatic hues, as 2018 plays out.
