According to studies, STEM jobs in the U.S. are on track to surpass 8.65 million by the year 2018, a 17 percent growth, making the need for qualified individuals in these fields more pressing than ever.  The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program aims to encourage students preparing to enter into college to pursue STEM careers, particular those relative to the automotive industry.

“Being selected as a national Buick Achievers Scholarship recipient will provide me with significant resources critical to earning a mechanical engineering degree,” said Victoria Lee, 2013 Buick Achievers recipient and student at Brown University.  “I encourage any student interested in studying STEM-related fields to consider applying for this program.”

The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program is one of the country’s largest and looks to empower women, minorities, and students dedicated to bettering their communities, as well as providing the necessary means for first-generation college students, military veterans and military dependents.  521 of the 2013 recipients are the first in their families to attend university, 45 are former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, and 48 are children of military families.

Of the 1,100 Achievers, 891 will pursue a STEM-related major.  Among those, mechanical engineering is the most sought-after degree.
