Today, General Motors Foundation announced that recipients of funds from the 2015 Buick Achievers Scholarship Program will score a cumulative $1.18 million to put toward education in the STEM fields.

The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program offers up to $25,000 per year for 50 college students looking to obtain degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. The scholarships are renewable for up to four years, and in the case of those entering qualified five-year engineering programs, a fifth.

“The future of our country lies in technology and innovation and depends on a strong pipeline of highly skilled talent,” said GM Foundation Chairman Bob Ferguson. “Our scholarship program is helping bridge the gap between a skilled workforce and positions that companies are looking to fill.”

Since 2011, the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program has handed out nearly $30 million in scholarships to college hopefuls around the country.

Of those receiving scholarships for 2015 and beyond, 62% are the first in their families to attend a university, 68% come from ethnically diverse backgrounds, and about 25% either come from military families or have service records themselves.

The amount of scholarships offered is down from a total of $2.5 million in 2014 and $4.2 million in 2013.
