The all-new Buick Envision was unveiled yesterday by Shanghai GM in Chengdu, and with the unveiling came a number of Buick Envision photos and plenty of specifics to flesh out the premium midsize SUV. For now, the Envision will remain solely in China, but Buick will be introducing the SUV to the American market for the 2016 model year.

The Buick Envision will be offered in four variants: AWD Elite, AWD Luxury, AWD Versatile Flagship, and AWD Versatile Sporty Flagship.

“The Envision is a versatile SUV and an important component of Shanghai GM’s SUV strategy,” remarked Wang Yongqing, President of Shanghai GM. “Designed for social elites, it offers an unmatched experience in the premium midsize SUV segment. It complements the Enclave and Encore in Buick’s SUV portfolio.”

The all-new Envision will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 EcoTec engine, which was appointed to Ward’s 10 Best Engines list in 2013. Mated to a six-speed DSS intelligent transmission, the efficient engine commands 256 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, taking the Envision from o to 100 km/h (about 62 mph) in 8.4 seconds. Additional bragging rights: the Envision is the only vehicle in its segment to boast an engine start/stop system standard across all variants. This, of course, contributes to its class-leading fuel economy (combined) of 8.8 L/100 km, which is about 26.73 mpg. We can expect similar numbers when the Envision comes to America.

The Envision also comes with intelligent all-wheel drive for a more responsive and efficient ride.

In total, the Envision is 4,667 mm in length, 1,839 in width, and 1,696 in height. It’s got a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, creating a roomy interior with split rear seats that fold flat and slide forward and backward. This allows for up to nearly 55 cubic feet of cargo space.

Like every automaker says about every car they ever make, Shanghai GM calls the Envision’s design “stylish and sporty.” But credit where credit is due—the Envision does look incredible. Exterior features include 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels, an aluminum alloy luggage rack, curved flank lines, an intelligent drag-reducing grille, a wing-shaped spoiler, and, because one wing is not enough, wing-style front and rear lights with LED lamps.

Drivers will get their choice of five exterior colors: Glacier Silver, Pearl Black, Sky Purple, Snowy White, and Topaz Brown.

On the inside, drivers will find 24 storage compartments to complement the excess of cargo space. Drivers can opt for either a Burgundy or a Swallowtail Black interior, both of which feature black piano accents. The center console is incredibly driver-oriented, and pure luxury is guaranteed by French-style dual stitching.

Safety was important during the design process for the engineers. The final product uses steel for 75 percent of the Envision’s body, and 13 percent is ultra-high-strength steel. Safety technologies include Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation Braking, Following Distance Indicator, Forward Collision Alert, Lane-Keeping Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The Envision also gets intelligent headlights, anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, a traction control system, electronic stability control, and Hill Start Assist. Optional features include the Automatic Parking Assist system, Hill Descent Control, and OnStar.

The Envision also gets an enhanced connectivity system with an eight-inch high-definition touchscreen, a touchpad, multifunctional buttons on the steering wheel, and voice control. The new model is also standard with Active Noise Cancellation, making it the first vehicle in the segment to boast the technology. As if that weren’t enough, the Envision also makes use of Quiet-Tuning® technology to abate sound even further.
