Buick Introduces New Excelle Sedan for Its Chinese Vehicle Lineup
As America abandons sedans, China gets a new one
By now, it should be abundantly clear that sedans simply aren’t attracting as many American motorists as they used to, with drivers opting for crossovers and SUVs instead. In response, both Ford and FCA have practically eliminated their passenger car lineups, with GM rumored to soon follow suit.
One market that hasn’t given up on sedans is China. In fact, Buick recently unveiled a new sedan for the Chinese market: the 2018 Buick Excelle.

This won’t be the first time a Buick sedan has adopted the “Excelle” nameplate. The Buick Excelle has already served as one of China’s most popular family sedans, reaching sales of nearly 2.7 million since its introduction in 2003.
This new Excelle model will be built from the ground up. Its exterior look will also be updated to match Buick’s modern design aesthetic.
The Buick Verano lives on in China
Even though Buick eliminated the Verano from its American vehicle lineup, the small sedan still exists in China. However, Verano fans need not dread the arrival of the Excelle, as the Verano and the Excelle will be sold side-by-side.
The Buick Excelle is set to be smaller than other compact cars in GM’s lineup, like the Chevrolet Cruze. It also has a smaller wheelbase than the Verano, at 102.8 inches compared to the Verano’s 105.7 inches.

Beyond that, not much else has been revealed about the Buick Excelle. Still, GM hopes that the Excelle sedan will appeal to younger customers throughout the Chinese market.
As China is currently Buick’s largest and most lucrative market, it makes sense to see new models being added to the automaker’s lineup there. It seems that as many markets begin to abandon passenger cars and sedans, China is quickly becoming one of the last places where new models of such vehicles are introduced.
