General Motors is extremely confident in the ability of the Buick Encore to remain popular in a segment that is becoming increasingly crowded. So confident, in fact, that GM will increase Encore production for the US by about 50% to match what it assumes will be record-breaking demand.

According to Automotive News, BuickGMC VP, Duncan Aldred, indicated the company’s plans to expand Encore production during the NADA convention in January, adding that he fully expects the small crossover to become the brand’s top-selling model in 2015.

There’s plenty of evidence to substantiate this: in its first year of sales (2013), Encore sales in the US totaled 31,956 models. In year two, that number increased 35% to 48,892 models with year-over-year growth in every single month of 2014. In the first month of 2015, Buick sold 3,454 Encores—a 46.4% year-over-year gain that put it just 43 models shy of topping the Enclave as the best-selling model for the month.

Aldred has been a major advocate for the Encore, telling Auto News, “I’ve stuck my neck out to get more Encores, because if you haven’t got them, you’re not going to sell them.”

Clearly, the Encore is selling like hotcakes, and combination of low fuel prices and the increasing popularity of the segment is likely to keep that trend going into 2015.

GM will reserve production capacity at its plants in Mexico, Spain, and South Korea for increased Encore output.
