Hollywood seems to love Buicks, as evidenced by vehicles from the luxury car brand showing up in films of almost every genre imaginable. La La Land opens up to the sounds and sights of many peoples’ worst nightmare: a highway traffic jam. It’s within this traffic jam that the audience is introduced to (after an impromptu musical number) the main characters, Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone). While Mia drives a Toyota Prius, Sebastian is behind the wheel of a 1982 Buick Riviera. The Riviera becomes a running gag of sorts throughout the film, with Sebastian pulling up outside Mia’s apartment and loudly honking on the horn each time he comes to pick her up, much to the chagrin of Mia’s roommates and neighbors.

In the Oscar-winning film Rain Man, Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) sets out on a cross-country road trip with his autistic brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), after their father passes away and leaves Charlie to inherit his 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible. It’s the first time the brothers have ever met each other, and the road trip gives them an opportunity to get to know one another. The Roadmaster is now one of the most iconic cars in Hollywood, and it has since been restored and passed around at different auctions.

Another Oscar-winning film that prominently features a Buick Roadmaster, Martin Scorsese’s The Departed is a drama that focuses on the inner workings of the Boston crime scene. Throughout the film, you can see Jack Nicholson’s character, mob boss Frank Costello, get driven around in a maroon colored 1994 Roadmaster. Buicks have made appearances in other gangster movies, such as The Road to Perdition (2002) and The Untouchables (1987).

Oscar Isaac plays a wandering folk singer in Inside Llewyn Davis, and, for part of the film, he rides with two other musicians from New York City to Chicago in a 1961 Buick Electra 225. As Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac), a beat poet (Garret Hedlund), and a jazz musician (John Goodman) traverse from city to city, they butt heads and encounter a few obstacles, in this black comedy directed by Joel and Ethan Coen.

It might be strange at first to associate Buick with the animated cars from Disney-Pixar’s Cars, but, sure enough, Chick Hicks, the main villain from the first film, appears to be modeled after a Buick Regal from the 1980s. Both the older models of the Regal and Chick Hicks feature strong, squared-off edges, a short trunk, and an overall “boxy” appearance that contrasts with the sleek look of Chick Hicks’ rival, Lightning McQueen.
